酒干倘卖无

This song is from a classic Taiwanese movie, about an orphan girl being raised by an old and deaf mute man. It is a poignont touching story with strong moral undertone.

The title of the song Jiu3 Gan tang4 mai4 wu2, is difficult to translate – it’s colloquial. The last word wu is pronounced as ‘bo’ in the Minnan dialect, while the second lasword is pronounced as ‘buoy’ .  When the old man and his daughter went into the alleys collecting and buying used bottles, the girl would yell in a clear and loud voice,  "Jiu Gan Tang Buoy Bo" to attract attentions.

Singer is 苏芮 Su Rui (Julie Su).  This is a very touching song, and one can’t help but feel being moved by the song.

多么熟悉的声音                    (shu2 xi = familiar)
陪我多少年风和雨
从来不需要想起
永远也不会忘记
没天那有地
没有地那有家
没有家那有你
没有你那有我
假如你不曾养育
                            (yang3 yu4 = raise / foster)
给我温暖的生活
假如你不曾保护
                            (bao3 hu4 = protect )
我的命运将会是什么
是你抚养我长大
                                (fu3 yang3 = bring up / foster)
陪我说第一句话
是你给我一个家
让我与你共同拥有它
虽然你不能开口说一句话
却更能明白人世间的黑白与真假
虽然你不会表达你的真情
却付出了热忱的生命
                        (re4 chen2 = enthusiasm)
远处传来你多么熟悉的声音
让我想起你多么慈祥心灵
           (ci2 xiang2 = kindness ; xin ling2 = spirit )
什么时候你再回到我身边
让我再和你一起唱
酒干淌卖无
